Oh! Contraire
Contraire Dance Association, or "Oh! Contraire", as we usually call ourselves, is one of the most influential and fun contra dance associations in the region. For 30+ years dancers and musicians from near and far have flocked to this popular dance each 4th Saturday of the month. We feature lively New England contra dance bands and also more old-time orientated musicians and enthusiastic callers at Russel Acton Folk Center.
A 2nd Friday dance at 128 North Broadway, the Carlberg Dance Palace, promotes pick-up bands, each month anchored by an invited musician. On August 14, Andrew Taylor will anchor the band. Open mic calling allows for a fun mix of callers, and is a great learning opportunity for those learning to call dances.
Before each dance the dancers are offered a walk-through, so everyone is better prepared for a do-si-do or a hey-for-four. Come as you are, by yourself or with friends. We are really nice to people.
During the 4th weekend of January each year Oh! Contraire and the Lexington Traditional Dance Association put together a dance weekend called "Swing Shift" . No pre-registration is needed for this event. Friday evening dance takes place in at ArtsPlace in Lexington and Saturday afternoon workshops, pot luck and evening dance in Berea.
