Wendy Graham (Brasstown, NC) is a self-described “dance maniac.” Her passion for traditional folk music, song, and dance caught fire in 1991 on a youth dance tour in Denmark. Today, she leads many kinds of dance, including English Country, American contras and squares, partner (swing, latin, waltz, blues, country), and line dances at community and private events around the country and abroad —from Alaska to Denmark and everywhere in between. When not leading and teaching dance, Wendy programs dance weeks/weekends and classes for teens and adults at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. She proudly served on the Lloyd Shaw Foundation and Country Dance and Song Society (CDSS) board and Lifetime Contribution Award committee. She is a current CDSS nominating committee member.

The Berea Castoffs have been playing for contra dances since the early 1990's. Instrumentation of this popular dance band includes fiddle, piano. mandolin, bass, and drums. Much of their music is written by Al White, who enjoys handpicking tunes to match the dances of the callers.

Al (fiddle, mandolin) and Alice (bass) White are experienced dance musicians, playing for Contra, Appalachian, English, Danish, and many other forms of folk dancing since the 1970s. Al's fiddle rhythmically sings, his mandolin sparkles, driving dance forward. Alice keeps rhythm steady and grounds the dancers. They have toured as musicians multiple times over decades with the Berea Festival Dancers and the Berea College Country Dancers. They were founding members of the Berea Castoffs and the Oh Contraire Dance Association, and have enjoyed playing at many Oh Contraire Dances since its inception. They have been on the music staff at the Christmas Country Dance School for most of 50 years., in addition to playing at other Dance weekends in Kentucky, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Michigan.

Al and Alice are members of the McLain Family Band and Al, Alice and Ruth. Al also enjoys occasionally playing with George Paul and Playing With Fyre.

Elise Melrood (Piano) has entertained audiences and dancers for decades as a member of the Reel World String Band and The Berea Castoffs. Her lively, spirited piano accompaniment and solos are often infused with her influences of Jazz, blues and folk music. She's wonderful with improvisation, and keeps the rhythm powering through the chord progressions.

Tripp Bratton (drum set, djembe, and much more fantastic percussion) is a professional percussionist extraordinaire, delighting dancers with many solos throughout every dance evening. He is a Lexington based performer, composer, producer and educator, who is an adjunct percussion instructor at Centre College and Berea College, and director of multiple ensembles in both places. He studied extensively with African and Caribbean/Latin percussion masters.

History of the festival

Continuing the joy of community dance begun as the Mountain Folk Festival adult section in the mid-20th century, this weekend moved to Levi Jackson State Park in London in the 1950s and became known as the Levi Jackson Dance Weekend.

It was here that a popular square dance for 5 couples was written by Pat Shaw, the Levi Jackson Rag.

In the 2010s, the Folk Circle Association (FCA) brought the weekend back to Berea, calling it the Fall Mountain Folk Festival. During the height of the COVID-19 epidemic, FCA organized a virtual festival where our community shared songs, stories, and dances, a festival Dennis Jacobs coined as our Fall Mountain "Faux" Festival since we could not meet in person.

We now pay homage to our local dance community by naming the festival for a signature dance created by the McLain Family in Berea, Balance the Star
